Halloween '08
This is an archival post taken from my old xanga blog. Comments have been disabled.
The "pumpkin" I carved last year gets, by far, the most hits of any post on my xanga blog, especially at this time of year. So I figured it was time to dig out the pumpkin carving kit and see what I could do this time around. While its not as unique or as scary as last year's squash, there is a twist. Tiare, at A Mountain of Crushed Ice is hosting a cocktail garnish contest, and what makes a better cocktail garnish than a 40 pound carved pumpkin? But first, we need a cocktail. (Beachbum Berry fans may recognize a similarity here to the Captain's Grog.)
Cannibal Punch
| ½ | oz lime juice | |
| ½ | oz grapefruit juice | |
| ½ | oz maple syrup | |
| ½ | oz Pimento Dram | |
| ½ | oz Clement Creole Shrubb | |
| ½ | oz Mt. Gay Eclipse Rum | |
| ½ | oz Matusalem Platino Rum | |
| 1 | dash vanilla extract | |
| 1 | dash almond extract | |
| ½ | oz Cruzan Blackstrap Rum |
Mix everything with ice in a cocktail shaker except the blackstrap. Pour, unstrained, into an old-fashioned glass, and float the blackstrap on top. Set in close proximity to one pumpkin eating another. Voila!
Apologies for the poor photography. The camera I borrowed isn't so great for low light, and its not like I'm a talented photographer. If you're interested in seeing the pumpkin in a bit more detail, an equally unsatisfactory photograph, albeit with flash, can be found here.
(Note: The selection of rums on this cocktail is largely a result of what I had present in my liquor cabinet, and is by no means sacred. Experiment with others.)
--EDIT--
Uploaded a pic from a camera that works better in low-light here.
